Death is an inevitable reality that everyone must face. While people may disagree on many things, there is universal agreement on the certainty of death, as we watch people die every day and feel powerless to intervene. Our wealth, modern technology, and intelligence cannot stop it. Science recognizes death as a natural process that cannot be stopped, although the effects of aging, which bring us closer to death, can be mitigated to some extent.
Interestingly, Islam does not view death as simply the departure of the soul from the body but rather describes six stages that each person will experience at the time of death. These stages will be different for each individual, influenced by their actions throughout life. For some, the experience of death will be peaceful. For others, it can be extremely painful.

As Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran, every living being has to taste death, and we will all experience it. We know that the taste of food depends on the person who tastes it. So this means that the same death has a different taste for each person. What are the six stages of death according to the Quran and Hadith? Let us try to find out. The first stage, i.e., Yaml-e-Mut, is the day when a person’s life ends and the day of his death is set. On this day, Allah Almighty orders the angels to go to the earth and take the soul of the person so that he can be prepared to meet his Lord. Unfortunately, no one knows that day, and when that day comes, a person does not realize that it is the day of his death. Yes, but on this day there are some physical changes that a person can feel inside his body. For example, on this day, the heart of a believer finds joy and peace, while the evildoer feels pressure in his heart. At this stage, we see the descent of the devils. Angels are coming from the sky to take the soul of this person, but the person cannot see them. This stage is mentioned in the Holy Quran as follows: Fear the Day when you will be returned to Allah, then every soul will be paid in full what it did. Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 281. The second stage is called the beginning of the process of the soul’s exit. This stage starts from the soles of the feet because the soul gradually moves upwards and reaches a place called the Turki through the legs, knees, stomach, navel, and chest. At this time, the person starts to feel tired and dizzy and is not even able to stand. Gradually, his physical strength starts to decrease in his body, but he still does not understand that his soul is leaving his body. The third stage is called the journey of the Turk. Let me tell you that the Turki refers to the two bones below the neck that extend to the shoulders. This stage is described as when the soul reaches the deceased, and it is said that the heedless will understand that now is the time to part from the world, and one of his calves will be entangled with another. According to verses 26 to 29 of Surah Alqamah, people are arguing among themselves about how to raise and lower their bodies. This is the time when people talk about calling a doctor or an ambulance or the Holy Quran.
Hope
A person facing death may still cling to their life and their feelings. At this stage, the process of their soul leaving their body is almost complete, and their lower body is almost lifeless. They can see and hear those around them, but their body is unable to respond in any way.
The fourth stage is called death, and it is the final stage of death. This stage is particularly difficult because the veils separating the physical world from the spiritual world are lifted with the person’s permission, allowing them to see their angels for the first time. This marks the first glimpse of an individual into the spiritual realm, a concept we have only heard of in the world.
Allah Almighty describes this experience in verse 22 of a surah of the Holy Quran. He states that the veil is immediately lifted, which increases vision. Allah Almighty further emphasizes this by asking why a person cannot get close to the soul at this time.
Surah Al-Waqi’ah
Surah Al-Waqi’ah verses 83-85 describe the moment when a person witnesses the mercy and wonders of Allah and reflects on his deeds throughout his life. During this critical time, it is noteworthy that Satan tries to mislead people, inciting them to utter words of disbelief before death. Allah Almighty addresses this in the Holy Quran, saying: “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the whisperings of Satan and from what comes to Me” (Surah Al-Mu’minun, verses 97-98).
The fifth stage refers to the moment when the angel of death arrives. At this stage, individuals become aware of their status – whether they belong to the people of mercy or the people of punishment.
